Claude Code adds MCP support: what changes for AI coding workflows

Claude Code now supports Model Context Protocol servers, enabling direct integration with external tools and data sources from within the AI coding assistant.

What happened

Claude Code now ships with built-in MCP (Model Context Protocol) support. In practice: you add a server config to .claude/settings.json, restart your session, and Claude Code can directly query your Postgres database, read your Sentry errors, or check your Vercel deployment status — all without leaving the terminal.

MCP is an open standard Anthropic published in late 2024. It defines how AI tools connect to external data sources through a simple JSON-RPC interface.

TIP

Quick setup: Add an MCP server config to .claude/settings.json, restart your session, and Claude Code gains access to your external tools immediately.

Why it matters

Before MCP, using Claude Code with external tools meant copy-pasting. Query your database in one tab, paste the result into Claude Code, ask it to analyze. Check deploy logs in another tab, paste those too.

With MCP, Claude Code calls the tool directly. A concrete example: you type “why are signups down today?” and Claude Code queries your analytics database, reads the last deploy log, and cross-references with your error tracker — in a single response.

Three specific capabilities this unlocks:

  • Database queries — Claude Code writes and executes SQL against your actual database via the Postgres/MySQL MCP server
  • Deployment awareness — Connect Vercel, Cloudflare, or AWS MCP servers so Claude Code knows what’s currently deployed
  • Documentation grounding — Point it at your internal docs via a filesystem MCP server, so answers reference your actual architecture

WARNING

MCP servers run with the same permissions as your terminal session. A misconfigured server could expose sensitive data. Review what each server can access before connecting it to Claude Code.

Who should care

  • Daily Claude Code users — The productivity jump from removing copy-paste context is significant. Start here.
  • Platform/DevOps teams — Building an internal MCP server for your deploy pipeline or observability stack takes an afternoon and saves every developer on the team time.
  • Tool builders — MCP is becoming a standard interface. If your developer tool doesn’t have an MCP server yet, your competitors probably will soon.

Practical takeaway

Add your first MCP server in under 5 minutes. The filesystem server is the simplest starting point — it gives Claude Code read access to a directory of your choice (docs, configs, specs). The setup is one JSON block in your settings file and a restart.
