Windsurf 2.0 now ships with Claude Opus 4.7, Anthropic’s most capable generally available model. The integration gives Windsurf users direct access to a model that Anthropic says performs at the frontier across coding, agentic workflows, and knowledge work.
Opus 4.7 is a meaningful upgrade over Opus 4.6, particularly for the kind of work AI coding editors demand. Anthropic optimized this release for sustained reasoning over long runs — exactly the pattern that matters when an AI agent is navigating a large codebase, chaining multiple file edits, or debugging across several steps. Windsurf’s own team highlighted this long-context reasoning as the key improvement.
NOTE
Opus 4.7 introduces a new tokenizer that can use roughly 1x to 1.35x as many tokens compared to previous models. If you’re on a usage-based plan, expect token counts to run up to 35% higher for the same prompts.
The model also introduces task budgets, a new mechanism for controlling how much compute an agent spends on a given task. For Windsurf users running complex multi-step operations, this could help prevent runaway token usage during agentic flows — though how much of that control surfaces in Windsurf’s UI versus the raw API remains to be seen in practice.
If you’re already using Windsurf, switch your model selector to Claude Opus 4.7 and test it on a task that previously stalled or produced inconsistent results over long sessions. That’s where the difference should be most visible. Keep an eye on token consumption if you’re paying per-use — the new tokenizer means your existing prompts will cost slightly more.
