Codex: 7M users, >10x growth in 6 months — but did it pass Claude Code?

Codex hit 7M users with a >10x jump in 6 months, adding 1M in ~24 hours. Without Claude Code usage data, the overtaking question stays unanswered.

Codex hit 7 million users after a >10x climb in six months — and added 1 million in roughly the last day. OpenAI’s coding agent is either nipping at Claude Code’s heels or already past it, and the difference depends on whose silence you trust.

The numbers, per Latent Space’s AINews:

  • 7M users — up from ~700K six months ago, a >10x jump
  • +1M in ~24 hours — a single-day surge pointing to a viral moment or pricing change
  • Claude Code: no comparable figure — Anthropic hasn’t disclosed user counts
  • Subagents GA — Codex shipped 8 parallel agents; Claude Code matched shortly after

Latent Space’s framing is blunt: “a quiet day lets us fact check some numbers against the sound of silence of Claude Code reporting.” Anthropic won’t publish usage stats, so any “Codex overtook Claude Code” claim rests on OpenAI’s numbers alone. WIRED documented OpenAI’s race to catch up to Claude Code earlier this year — a gap that has narrowed or closed.

NOTE

The 10x usage promotion for Pro $100 subscribers ended recently. r/codex users report a 79% usage drop after the switch to $0.01-per-credit billing. The 7M figure may reflect peak-promotion inflow, not a stable baseline.

Claude Code isn’t standing still — weekly limits were temporarily boosted 50% through July 13, and Anthropic dropped its 5-hour rate limit window. Both tools are now competing on usage caps, not just capability.

The honest answer to “did Codex overtake Claude Code”: nobody knows, because Anthropic won’t say. OpenAI publishes growth numbers; Anthropic publishes benchmark wins. Until both report the same metric, the comparison is one-sided by design.
