KTStack: A Native macOS Dev Environment Built by a Vibe Coder Teaching Himself Swift

KTStack bundles Nginx, PHP, Node.js, Python, databases, and Cloudflare Tunnels into a single native macOS app. It's open source and built as a learning project.

A Laravel developer spent a year teaching himself Swift by building the local dev environment he actually wanted. KTStack is a native macOS app that manages the full stack — web servers, runtimes, databases, mail — from a single GUI.

What it bundles:

  • Nginx & PHP-FPM with PHP 8.1, 8.3, and 8.4
  • Node.js, Python, and Go runtimes
  • MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and MongoDB
  • Local .test domains with auto-generated HTTPS certificates
  • Mailpit for local email testing
  • Cloudflare Tunnel sharing for temporary public URLs
  • Per-site logs accessible from the app

The closest comparisons are Laravel Valet and Herd, but KTStack goes wider — it’s not PHP-only. It handles multiple runtimes and four databases through a native macOS interface, using launchd and XPC under the hood rather than Docker containers.

The creator posted on r/vibecoding asking for feedback on the UI and overall approach. The project started as a way to understand how DNS, TLS, and privileged helpers actually work on macOS — a learning project that turned into a usable tool. The developer describes himself as “still a Swift beginner,” which makes the scope ambitious: managing system-level services from a sandboxed app requires dealing with macOS security layers that trip up experienced Swift developers.

NOTE

KTStack is fully open source on GitHub. The developer is actively soliciting feedback on usability and architecture.

The pitch for vibe coders: if you prototype across multiple stacks on macOS and don’t want to manage Homebrew services or spin up Docker for every project, KTStack consolidates the setup into one app. Worth watching if the community picks it up.
