GPT-5.5 and Codex are now generally available on Amazon Bedrock. Enterprises running on AWS can access OpenAI’s most capable models without leaving their existing cloud environment — same security controls, same procurement workflows, same governance stack.
What ships on Bedrock:
- GPT-5.5 — OpenAI’s most advanced frontier model, available at first-party pricing parity (no AWS markup)
- Codex — OpenAI’s code-specialized agent, now accessible through Bedrock’s API surface
- Existing AWS controls — IAM, VPC configs, CloudTrail logging, and enterprise billing all apply natively
The real story here isn’t the models — developers could already hit OpenAI’s API directly. It’s the procurement path. Large enterprises with committed AWS spend, negotiated EDPs, and security reviews locked to a single cloud provider now get OpenAI access without a separate vendor relationship. That friction killed adoption at dozens of Fortune 500 companies.
OpenAI called this “the beginning of a broader expansion” on AWS, suggesting more models and deeper integration are coming. For AWS, it’s a defensive play: Azure has had exclusive OpenAI access since 2023, and that exclusivity pulled enterprise AI workloads toward Microsoft. Bedrock availability neutralizes that advantage for teams already committed to AWS.
NOTE
Pricing matches OpenAI’s direct API rates. Teams already on Bedrock can add OpenAI models without renegotiating contracts — usage counts toward existing AWS commitments.
Available now in the Bedrock console. Teams with existing AWS environments can start evaluating GPT-5.5 and Codex immediately — no separate OpenAI account required.
