GitHub Copilot: zero DNS configuration for GitHub Pages

GitHub Copilot automates DNS setup for Pages custom domains — empty repo to live HTTPS site in 14 minutes, no manual records.

GitHub Copilot can take an empty repository to a live custom domain with HTTPS on GitHub Pages in about 14 minutes — without manually editing a single DNS record.

The traditional Pages custom-domain workflow requires:

  • A records pointing your apex domain to GitHub’s IP addresses
  • CNAME record routing the www subdomain to your Pages site
  • HTTPS activation — toggled after DNS propagates, then waiting for certificate provisioning
  • Repository settings — entering the custom domain in Pages config and verifying ownership

Copilot collapses this into a single guided session. No switching between your DNS provider’s dashboard and GitHub’s repo settings. No polling DNS to check whether records propagated before requesting a TLS certificate.

GitHub’s post frames the benchmark as empty repo to live domain in roughly the time it takes to grab coffee.

NOTE

“Zero DNS configuration” means zero manual record editing. You still need a registered domain and a Copilot subscription. Org-level setup requires Copilot Business or Enterprise through an enterprise account.

The 14-minute figure assumes a domain you already own and a repo ready to deploy. DNS propagation varies by provider — the automation handles configuration, not physics.
