Kotlin Benchmark: JetBrains Ships Official Eval Suite for AI Coding Agents

JetBrains releases the Kotlin Benchmark, evaluating AI coding agents on end-to-end Kotlin tasks from issue triage to validated solutions.

JetBrains shipped the Kotlin Benchmark — its official suite for evaluating AI coding agents on end-to-end Kotlin tasks, from reading an issue to producing a solution that passes validation.

The benchmark measures three concrete capabilities:

  • Issue comprehension — agents read a real issue and understand what needs fixing
  • Code generation — agents produce Kotlin source that addresses the issue
  • Validation passing — the generated solution must clear automated checks

This fills a gap that generic coding benchmarks like SWE-bench leave open. Most existing suites test Python-heavy or language-agnostic tasks. Kotlin-specific evaluation has been limited to firebender’s Kotlin-bench, which focuses on code understanding — not the full agent loop of issue-to-solution.

NOTE

JetBrains ships its own AI coding agent, Junie, inside IntelliJ IDEA. The Kotlin Benchmark gives JetBrains a yardstick to measure Junie against competitors — but it’s positioned as a general-purpose benchmark, not a Junie-specific test.

The release lands amid a wave of agentic coding benchmarks pushing toward real-world fidelity. ProjDevBench combines online judge testing with LLM-assisted code review. Snorkel’s Agentic Coding Benchmark targets full software engineering complexity. JetBrains narrows the lens to Kotlin specifically — a language where coroutine concurrency, null safety, and multiplatform targets create failure modes that Python-centric benchmarks don’t catch.

Available now — details and access instructions are on the JetBrains Kotlin blog. JetBrains calls this “the first step,” suggesting more task coverage and evaluation criteria are coming.
