What it does
Canvas Design makes Claude produce static visual art — posters, covers, single-page compositions — as PNG or PDF files. It runs a two-step process: first it writes a short design-philosophy manifesto as a Markdown file (naming an aesthetic movement and describing form, color, and composition rules), then it executes that philosophy on a canvas with minimal typography and heavy use of shape, pattern, and negative space. It is most useful when the request is a one-off art object rather than a reusable template or brand system.
Use cases
- Generate a launch poster for a product or event where the deliverable is a single high-craft PNG or PDF, not a Figma file or editable layout.
- Produce cover art for a report, zine, or album by having Claude first author an aesthetic movement (e.g. “Chromatic Silence”) and then render a matching front page.
- Draft moodboard-style design references to hand to a human designer, using the generated
.mdphilosophy as the written brief alongside the visual.
When to use it
- The output needed is a finished image or PDF, not source files for further editing.
- The brief is loose and benefits from Claude choosing an aesthetic direction rather than following a rigid spec.
- The piece is text-light — a title, a label, a date — with visual composition doing the work.
- One-page format is acceptable (or a small sequence of pages bundled into a PDF).
When NOT to use it
- The design must match an existing brand system, style guide, or color tokens exactly — the skill deliberately invents its own philosophy each time.
- The output needs to be an editable Figma, Sketch, or Illustrator file.
- The content is text-heavy (long-form documents, slide decks with bullet copy) — this skill treats text as visual accent only.
- The reference is a specific living artist’s style; the skill is instructed to avoid copying identifiable artists.

Prompt
Use the canvas-design skill to create a poster for a small ceramics exhibition called "Slow Hands" opening in November — output a single PDF. Troubleshooting
Output looks generic or “AI-generated” rather than crafted Ask Claude to run the built-in refinement pass explicitly: tell it the piece “isn’t perfect enough — refine the existing composition rather than adding new elements.” The skill is designed to iterate on cohesion instead of piling on more graphics, but it often needs a nudge to trigger that second pass.
Text overlaps the edge of the canvas or collides with graphics Request a regeneration and specify tighter margins, or ask Claude to reduce the number of typographic elements. The skill’s own rules require full containment with breathing room, so framing the fix as “enforce your own margin rule” tends to work better than describing pixel values.
Fonts fall back to a default sans-serif instead of something distinctive The skill looks in a ./canvas-fonts directory for typefaces. If none are present it defaults to whatever the sandbox provides. Add a few open-license font files to that folder before invoking the skill, or ask Claude to download specific fonts first.
Result feels illustrative or cartoonish when a serious tone was wanted Explicitly name a design tradition in the prompt — “Swiss formalism,” “Japanese photobook,” “Brutalist poster” — so the generated philosophy anchors on that reference. Without a hint the skill picks its own aesthetic, which can skew playful.
