Figma: AI Assistant Lands Inside the Design Canvas

Figma launched an AI assistant directly in its collaborative design canvas, letting users generate, edit, and iterate on designs with natural language prompts.

Figma now has an AI assistant living inside its collaborative design canvas — not a sidebar, not a separate tool, but an agent that operates on the same shared surface where teams already work.

Users can direct the assistant with natural language prompts to:

  • Generate new designs from scratch on the canvas
  • Edit existing designs — layout changes, component swaps, styling adjustments
  • Iterate on work in progress without leaving the collaborative file
  • Automate repetitive design tasks that previously required manual clicking through menus

The assistant launches first in Figma Design, not FigJam or Dev Mode. That’s a deliberate choice — Figma is putting AI where the highest-value design work happens, not where it’s easiest to demo.

This positions Figma directly against a growing field. Tools like v0 (Vercel), Galileo AI, and Magic Patterns already generate UI from prompts, but they all require designers to leave Figma and import results back. Figma’s bet is that keeping AI inside the existing workflow — same canvas, same components, same multiplayer cursors — removes the friction that kills adoption.

NOTE

Figma hasn’t disclosed pricing details for the AI assistant or whether it will be available on free-tier plans. The feature is rolling out to Figma Design users first.

The real test is design-system awareness. Generating a generic card component from a prompt is table stakes in 2026. What matters is whether Figma’s assistant can respect an existing design system — use the right tokens, pull from the right component library, follow spacing conventions already established in the file. That’s the gap between a demo and a tool teams actually use daily.

Available now in Figma Design. No word yet on FigJam or Dev Mode timelines.
